#1 - Have a clear out

The first thing you should do is... Have a clear out!

We ALWAYS recommend starting the packing process by getting rid of or giving away anything you no longer want or need.

You'll find that over the years, you've gathered a lot of stuff - some of which you may no longer wish to keep when it's time to move home! So, before you get packing, we recommendgoing through your clothes, old electronics and any other miscellaneous things and deciding what you're keeping and what you're not. Anything that isn't coming with you will be greatly received by your local high-street charity shop, we're sure! Local supermarkets like TESCO also have donation banks too.

TIP - In many cases - the less items you take, the cheaper your moving quote will be.

#2 - Packing materials

When it comes to packing, you'll need most - if not all - of the following packing materials:

  • Boxes
  • Wardrobe boxes
  • Scissors
  • Brown tape
  • Fragile tape
  • Packing paper
  • Bubble wrap
  • Marker pens
    • OPTIONAL

    • Vacuum bags
    • Jumbo laundry bags
      • #3 - If it can fit in a box, put it in a box

When it comes to packing up your things, start with the non-fragile items first. Anything non-fragile that can fit in a box, should be put in a box. This includes any and all miscellaneous items as loose items are at risk of being broken and can add time to your moving day.

TIP - Lampshades and light bulbs can be put in boxes

        #4 - Fragile items

It's very important that you wrap all fragile items. When packing crockery, china, glassware or any items of sentimental value etc. then make sure that you make use of packing paper, bubblewrap and newspaper. Use any excess packing paper to fill in any gaps in any boxes to prevent your items from shifting around when being moved.

TIP - Stand plates upright to maximise space in boxes.

        #5 - Labels

If you are packing your own home, we would encourage you to not mix items together that will be going in different rooms and to label everything. Not only will this help oour movers to know where to put your items, but also save you time and prevent any stress when organising and unpacking. We know that you just want to settle in to your new home!

PRO TIP - If you plan on reusing your boxes, we would advise you to write on the tape instead of the box to keep the box fresh.

        #6 - Chest of drawers

We recommend leaving your clothes in their chest of drawers (if applicable), as we will be able to move these as they are. This means less time packing and money saved on boxes. Our team will pallet-wrap the chest of drawers to ensure that none of the drawers will fly out and if they are too heavy to be moved, then we can always take out the drawers and put them pack in, inside the van.

#7 - Pictures, mirrors and TVs

Any small pictures or mirrors that can fit into a box - you guessed it - can go in a box. Our team will look after any picture frames or mirrors that are too big for boxes by using our picture frame covers. If you happen to have the original box for the TVs, then please use these. However, if you don't, we will bring our padded TV covers to protect these while they are in transit.

        #8 - Wardrobe boxes

These are fantastic for moving items like suits, dresses and any clothes that normally sit on a hanger. We have our own which we use for our packing moves and these can also be rented.

If you do require our wardrobe boxes, just let us know before moving day and we will arrive with them on the day to look after your clothes.

        #9 - Large items

Concerned about your mattress or sofa? Unsure on how to pack these? Leave it to us! We will both wrap and cover your sofas, armchairs, mattresses etc. on moving day to ensure that they are looked after properly.

        #10 - Essential items

It's always a good idea to keep a bag or two of essential items you will need leading up to moving day. A spare saucepan, plastic cutlery, toiletries, chargers, towels, baby food, pet food and a first aid kit are a few items that might be handy leaving until last minute to pack.
